We hear from founder Don Garvan why he sees sustainability in the furniture industry as a necessity, not a luxury, and why we should too.

Why did you start your eco-furniture business?

I grew up on a farm in the South Island of New Zealand. I have always felt a deep connection with nature. Surrounded by her and exposed to her from a young age, I have always felt the desire to protect her.

Totem Road is an eco-friendly furniture company born out of this sustainable philosophy that brings you back to nature. Our collection embraces timeless design and sustainable practices, and we work closely with a family-run manufacturer in Vietnam.

We don’t see sustainable furniture as a luxury, but as a necessity. We understand the need for people to have options when it comes to price and style, but all businesses should incorporate sustainable practices into their production. The world literally depends on it!

Describe the collection to us.

The Totem Road brand is not about seasons or trends. There is a signature collection that spans the living room, bedroom, dining room and office; but we create limited series and limited styles. This is deliberate as it means we don’t have a lot of stock in stock and only design and create what our customers want and need.

What makes your eco-friendly furniture brand unique?

We are committed to minimizing the impact of modern disposable culture on our planet, collections are timeless and seasonless. There are signature styles that will be loved forever with an emphasis on contemporary design, responsibly sourced materials and premium quality.

All of our products are made from 100% sustainable solid oak, which is much more durable than veneers for comparison, but also much better for the environment. All wood is FSC certified.

So how can customers buy furniture responsibly online with you?

It’s not just about the materials we use. For us, sustainability means more than just responsible forest management. We have a comprehensive chain of custody process in place with due diligence and risk assessment systems. This means that all components of our supply chain comply with current legislation. We personally take care of the environment and the local communities involved in our activities.

We also pack all of our products in fully recyclable and biodegradable packaging, so your purchases don’t contribute to landfills or harm the environment. This comes at a cost to us, but cheaper petrochemical packaging such as polystyrene has a large manufacturing footprint, contains toxic substances and has little or no biodegradability.

How would you describe the aesthetic of Totem Road?

Raw and refined, minimal and sophisticated. It is timeless and adapts to all interior styles and spaces.
