Goodwill is expanding its online presence, promising high-tech features ranging from scanned receipts to personalized alerts.
The 120-year-old Maryland-based nonprofit this month launched GoodwillFinds, a shopping business that offers approximately 100,000 donated items for purchase online and expands Goodwill’s internet presence that , until now, was limited to auction sites like ShopGoodwill.com or individuals. stores selling gifts online through eBay and Amazon. GoodwillFinds aims to have 1 million items online within the next year or two.
Spearheading the company is Matthew Kaness, the new CEO of the online shopping arm who has 20 years of retail experience.
“Access to shopping and saving on Goodwill will be unprecedented for the first time online compared to accessing your store alone or trying to browse a sea of items on Amazon and eBay,” said Kaness told The Associated Press. “The second thing is that through technology we’re going to be able to personalize discovery, recommendations, notification, email alerts, everything you’re used to when shopping at other brands.”
GoodwillFinds is a separate entity from Goodwill Industries International Inc., but will support the larger organization by helping to fund its community programs across the United States, providing job training, job placement, and mentoring for youth. It should also increase donations, while helping to expand its customer base.
